My journey began, November 1, 1996, with a heart attack at work. From there with a 50% chance of surviving, I’ve experienced failure with a stent, had single artery bypass, defibrillator implanted, congestive heart failure, and end stage heart failure. I had to depend on others to drive me back and forth to doctors and hospitals, walking short distances, shortness of breath, regular chest pain, constant fatigue, medication changes, sleepless nights, isolation and some depression. My loved ones assisted me at all levels of care.
By the grace of God, the marvels of modern medicine, and skilled doctors, I have a new life. It would not be possible though, without the family who said yes to organ donation. The heart was a good match. Medication adjustments are less frequent. My overall quality of life continues to improve.
There’s been physical, mental, spiritual and emotional healing in my life. I’ve seen my children graduate from high school and college, developed relationships with grandchildren, and seen new nieces and nephews. I’ve been present with and for others at funerals, celebrations, reunions and sickness.
Through my involvements with church and charity organizations, many opportunities arise to give back by being the voice, ears, eyes, hands, feet and source of encouragement for others. New levels of friendships have developed. In closing, I’m so grateful for the encouragement and assistance from the Heart Exchange Support Group these last five years.
